Malcolm Roberts was appointed as a full time Commissioner to the Productivity Commission in May 2019. Malcolm has enjoyed a diverse career in the public and private sectors, beginning in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet in 1993 where he contributed to national competition policy reform. After many years serving as a policy adviser to Ministers, Malcolm led policy development and advocacy for national peak bodies in the housing, retail, and energy sectors. Over the last ten years, his career has focused on energy policy, serving as the chief executive officer for the National Generators’ Forum, the Energy Networks Association and the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association. Beside these roles in the energy sector, Malcolm was the chairman of the Queensland Competition Authority (QCA) for almost three years. During that time, he was closely involved in the economic regulation of monopoly utilities in the rail, water and ports sectors as well as supporting regulatory reform through the QCA’s Office of Best Practice Regulation. Malcolm holds a BA (Hons) and a PhD from the University of Queensland. He is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He has served as a director on a number of not-for-profit Boards. Malcolm is currently a commissioner for the Future Drought Fund inquiry.
