The state taxes regimes across Australia have seen significant changes in the last few years. The last 12 months have been no exception, marking a number of major developments – particularly in NSW – with state and territory governments under pressure to repair budgets following recent crises.

This paper provides an overview of the more substantial developments over the last year, including:

  • NSW amendments to the duties regime – acknowledgements of trust, changes in beneficial ownership, and other amendments
  • Property tax reform – ending not with a bang but a whimper?
  • Medical practices and Payroll tax – where are we now?; and
  • Recent cases and appeals update.
