As part of its 2003/04 Compliance Program the ATO has sent out 15,000 letters to taxpayers explaining common errors in rental deductions. In addition the ATO has requested that another 5000 taxpayers justify their claims via detailed schedules to be lodged with their returns. In 2002, $13.2 billion was claimed in rental deductions - it is now a major focus for audit activity.
