I am not sure if it is correct to say that "some things change and some things never change" or "those that do not learn from the mistakes of history are doomed to repeat them!" However we view it historically, the role and the responsibility of the tax advisor in today's environment needs urgent clarification and therefore a very relevant matter for the Federal Government to release their plan for the National Review of Standards for the tax profession. In the meantime, I believe that in looking at our practice management plan for 2005, we should be including an assessment of how tax advice, and indeed tax risk for us and our clients, is to be properly handled.
