The Tax Institute welcomes tax reform debate back into the spotlight with release of Tax Green Paper

Published on: 21 Nov 2024

SYDNEY, 21 November 2024: The Tax Institute welcomes the release of the Tax Green Paper by Independent MP for Wentworth Allegra Spender. The Institute has long supported the need for holistic tax reform, and we continue to welcome and support any discussion and debate on this.

We congratulate Allegra for her team's continued work in this area, and her passion for keeping the issue at the front of people's minds in a time when the courage to do this has been missing in many politicians.

The Green Paper outlines six priorities for tax reform and references The Tax Institute’s 2021 Case for Change – a paper to prompt discussion for the future of Australia’s tax system, particularly when referencing the recommendation to form an independent Tax Reform Commission to help reduce the politicisation of tax reform, alleviate the pressure on Government to initiate a reform agenda, and promote better informed and more ambitious tax policy. The tax reform debate is sorely overdue within the halls of our Parliament. An ongoing discussion would give much-needed focus to the future of Australia and the impact the status quo will continue to have on future generations.

Scott Treatt, CEO of The Tax Institute, says, ‘If the lives and future of our children are not the call to action needed, what is?’ ‘It's time to depoliticise the debate on tax. This is about the sustainability of our society and ensuring Australians of the future have opportunities. It's about ensuring Australians can continue to have a fair go. The current state does not allow for this.’ ‘It's time to stick to the facts, not the fear many election campaigns rely on. The fact is, our tax system is not sustainable. It’s time to focus on our future.’

Scott Treatt is available for commentary on the need for tax reform.
