Tax can be an incredibly rewarding profession. It’s analytical, creative, interpersonal problem-solving at its best. But we know it can also be tricky to navigate at times, especially for practitioners new to the intricacies of tax, or new to the professional working world entirely.
A recent Tax Institute survey revealed that 72% of respondents didn’t feel their university experience prepared them for a career in tax. Similarly, 82% of respondents felt other young professionals coming into their workplaces were underprepared for the realities of a tax career.
So how do we change this and ensure anyone entering the profession is confident in their skills and knowledge?
Support for your team is support for your business
The same survey found that 89% of respondents said that opportunities for further learning funded through their employer contributed to their job satisfaction, while 88% said that they would be more likely to stay with an employer or join a new employer who offered continued learning opportunities. So investing in your young team members is a win-win scenario.
Learning doesn’t have to just be through structured education programs! Hands-on experiential learning, hearing from experts on tax technical topics and picking up the soft skills of networking and professional conduct can be invaluable to young professionals.
How we’re supporting young tax practitioners
At The Tax Institute, we’re committed to supporting the next generation of tax professionals – whether they’re new to the workforce or new to tax.
As part of our commitment to advance education in tax, we’re offering a new Tax Institute Next Gen Grant, which allows 10 new practitioners to receive a complimentary ticket to the upcoming Next Generation Tax Convention.
“The Next Generation Tax Convention is the first event of its kind on The Tax Institute's Events Calendar, with sessions covering a range of topical, ethical and technical content designed by a committee of young practitioners paving the way for the future,” Ioannou said.
“Whether you're on day 1 or day 100 of your tax journey, the Next Generation Tax Convention has something for you.”
The Next Generation Tax Convention is a 2-day event in Brisbane at the exclusive Calile hotel, where attendees will enjoy 8 tax technical sessions selected specially to support young tax professionals.
