If you have a knack for numbers and a passion for helping businesses stay on top of their financial obligations, becoming a registered Business Activity Statement (BAS) agent could be the perfect career path for you. BAS agents play a crucial role in ensuring that businesses comply with their tax responsibilities, and the process to become one is more accessible than you might think. Here are the steps you need to take to become a BAS agent.

Step 1: Understand the requirements

The first step in becoming a BAS agent is to familiarise yourself with the requirements set out by the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB). According to the Tax Agent Services Regulations 2022 (TASR), individuals aspiring to become registered BAS agents must meet specific qualifications and experience criteria. These include holding at least a Certificate IV in Financial Services in bookkeeping or accounting and acquiring a certain number of hours of relevant experience.

Step 2: Complete the required courses

To meet the educational requirements set by the TPB, you must complete a TPB-approved course on:

  • Basic GST/BAS taxation principles, and
  • The Tax Agent Services Act 2009 (TASA), including the Code of Professional Conduct (Code).

Step 3: Pass the BAS Agent Exam

One of the key milestones on the path to becoming a BAS agent is passing the BAS Agent Exam. This exam assesses your understanding of GST and BAS taxation principles and is a requirement for registration with the TPB. Successfully passing this exam by achieving 85% or higher demonstrates your competence in handling BAS-related tasks, such as preparing and lodging business activity statements accurately.

Step 4: Apply for registration

Once you have met all the educational and experience requirements, you can apply for registration as a BAS agent with the TPB. This involves submitting an application and providing evidence of your qualifications and relevant experience. Upon approval, you will be officially registered as a BAS agent, allowing you to legally provide BAS services to clients.

Step 5: Stay informed and compliant

As a registered BAS agent, it's essential to stay informed about changes to tax laws and regulations. The TPB requires registered agents to adhere to a Code of Professional Conduct and undertake continuing professional education to maintain their registration. By staying up to date with industry developments and best practices, you can ensure that you provide high-quality services to your clients while remaining compliant with regulatory requirements.

Step 6: Consider membership with The Tax Institute and furthering your career in tax

Becoming a BAS agent is a rewarding career choice that offers opportunities for personal and professional growth.
