Paul’s career in tax commenced when he accepted the offer of a position as a base-grade clerk in the Debt Recovery section of the Australian Taxation Office in Hobart. He was soon promoted to a position in Assessing, and later moved to Field Audit and Investigations; followed by time as Hobart Office Accountant and later as a Senior Case Manager in ATO Complaints. In 2000 he was seconded to the Commonwealth Ombudsman’s office to assist with the bedding-in of the New Tax System. Paul obtained degrees in commerce and later in law, both from the University of Tasmania. In 2012 he decided to move into private legal practice. He is a lawyer at Tierney Law in Hobart, where in addition to Commonwealth and State taxation matters, he advises clients on wills and estate planning; estate management; trust law; property and commercial law; and consumer law. Paul has been a member of the Tax Institute for 29 years and serves on the Tasmanian State Council.
