Our membership criteria


Choose your level

Four levels of active membership are available to tax professionals. Each category of membership demonstrates a different level of expertise and has its own eligibility criteria, including academic and workplace qualifications.

Core voting member criteria

Each Chartered Tax Adviser, Fellow and Associate applicant (as voting members of The Tax Institute) must meet the following criteria:

  • Be of good fame, integrity and character*; and
  • Satisfies one or more of the following criteria:
    • Hold a degree or postgraduate award from an Australian tertiary institution or an equivalent institution in the discipline of accounting; or
    • Hold a diploma or higher award from an Australian registered training organisation (RTO) or equivalent institution in the discipline of accounting; or
    • Have completed the academic qualifications required to be an Australian legal practitioner; or
    • Registered as a tax agent; or
    • A registered tax agent or nominee immediately before 1 March 2010 and a voting member of a recognised professional association immediately before 1 March 2010; or
    • Have the equivalent of 8 years' full time experience in providing tax agent services in the past 10 years.

Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) voting member criteria

A person will be eligible to apply to be admitted as a Chartered Tax Adviser of The Tax Institute if he or she:

  • Meets the core voting membership criteria (as stated above); and
  • Meets the Fellow membership criteria (as stated below); and
  • Has successfully passed The Tax Institute's CTA3 Advisory Exam assessment.

Fellow (FTI) voting member criteria

A person will be eligible to apply to be admitted as a Fellow of the Tax Institute if he or she:

Associate (ATI) voting member criteria

A person will be eligible to apply to be admitted as an Associate of the Tax Institute if he or she:

  • Meets the core voting membership criteria (as stated above); and
  • Has a minimum of 1 year’s relevant tax experience; and
  • Meets either i. or ii. below:
    • i. Satisfies one or more of the following criteria:
    • ii. Has a minimum of eight years fulltime experience in providing tax agent services in the past 10 years.

Affiliate non-voting member criteria

A person will be eligible to apply to be admitted as an Affiliate of The Tax Institute if he or she:

  • Is of good fame, integrity and character*; and
  • Satisfies one or more of the following criteria:
    • Has successfully passed The Tax Institute's CTA1 Foundations or an equivalent qualification from a Tax Institute accredited education provider; or
    • Would otherwise qualify for admission as an Associate member but does not have any relevant Australian experience; or
    • Is enrolled in The Tax Institute's CTA2A Advanced course; or
    • Is employed by the commonwealth or state revenue authority engaged in taxation practice or administration; or
    • Has an interest in the affairs of The Tax Institute who National Council resolves to admit as an Affiliate,

Student non-voting member criteria

A person will be eligible to apply to be admitted as a Student member of The Tax Institute if he or she:

  • Is enrolled in The Tax Institute's CTA1 Foundations course; or
  • Is enrolled in a TAFE course; or
  • Is enrolled in a full-time undergraduate course; or
  • Is enrolled in a full-time postgraduate course; or
  • Is enrolled in a part-time undergraduate course; or
  • A person or persons the National Council resolves to be admitted as a Student member.

Supporting documentation

As part of your application, you will need to provide proof of your eligibility and experience in the form of:

  • Degree or diploma certificate; or
  • Degree or diploma transcript; or
  • Current legal practising certificate; or
  • Current Registered Tax Agent certificate; and (if required)
  • Current RTAA voting membership certificate; and
  • A copy of your relevant experience; or
  • A letter from your employer confirming you have the required tax experience; or
  • A copy of your current résumé.
