Our Diploma of Australian Taxation Law was approved by the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) on 29 June 2011 as a suitable course in Australian taxation law. Our diploma qualification is achieved through successful completion of the Certificate in Foundation Tax course and the Certificate in Applied Tax course. These two certificate courses build on each other to provide the diploma qualification.
These courses will provide candidates with a detailed understanding of the concepts and practical application of Australian taxation law and is ideal for those wanting to become a Registered Tax Agent and/or for those wishing to practise in the areas of accounting, tax law and financial management. These courses are also an ideal refresher for candidates currently practising in the area of tax law and dealing with compliance taxation issues on a daily basis.

Who is it for?
There are no prerequisites for enrolling in Certificate in Foundation Tax, however we recommend you should be working in the Australian tax profession or about to embark on a career in Australian tax.
These courses are also for those wanting to become a Registered Tax Agent and who are looking to meet the requirements of the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) for an approved course in Australian tax law. Our Diploma course was approved by the TPB in 2011 as an acceptable course. Refer to www.tpb.gov.au for more information.
What you will learn
After successful completion of Certificate in Foundation Tax you will be able to:
- complete simple tax returns for individuals, partnerships, trusts and companies
- identify, understand and apply relevant tax legislation and guidelines in common circumstances
- complete PAYG and BAS statements
- interpret the tax consequences of business structures
- understand the compliance responsibilities of a tax agent
- calculate CGT and GST and explain the impact on individuals and businesses.
After successful completion of Certificate in Applied Tax you will be able to:
- complete accurate and compliant tax returns for individuals and businesses with complex affairs
- extract relevant data from business client interviews and complex and extended sources
- evaluate alternative tax strategies
- apply legislation and procedures for tax compliance including non-tax impacts (assurance, financial reporting and business planning)
- display confident, professional, ethical and commercial values and skills
- prepare complex tax planning issues for the approval of senior staff
- distinguish between accounting and tax treatment of receipts/income and expenses/deductions
- prepare non-complex company returns on various transactions.
Course structure (30 CPD hours)
The Diploma award is a two-step process. First, you are required to successfully complete Certificate in Foundation Tax and then the Certificate in Applied Tax course. After successful completion of both certificate courses you will be awarded with the Diploma of Australian Taxation Law.
The courses have been scheduled to permit candidates to complete the two courses in 12 months. However if you are a new graduate in your first year of working we recommend that the courses are completed over eighteen to twenty-four months.
Course structure for Foundation Tax:
- Approximately 17-19 weeks* (110 hours)
- Face-to-face lectures or distance mode of study available
- Eight learning modules: Introduction to the Australian Tax System, Individuals, Businesses, Structures, Loans, GST, CGT and FBT
- Assessment including final exam and online checkpoint tests.
Course structure for Applied Tax:
- Approximately 20 weeks* (132 hours)
- Face-to-face lectures or distance mode of study available
- Nine learning modules: Ethics, CGT, Corporate Tax, Partnerships and Trusts, GST, Superannuation, FBT, International Tax and Tax Strategies.
- Assessment includes, tax administration workbook, assignment and final exam.

Exemptions and recognition
The Institute graduates receive recognition with selected universities and professional associations.
Graduates of Foundation Tax are entitled to seek one elective subject exemption from the Bachelor of Taxation qualification at the Australian School of Taxation (Atax) at the University of New South Wales.
Graduates of Applied Tax will gain:
- exemption for the CA Program Tax Module offered by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia. All other entry requirements to the CA Program must be satisfied.
- exemption from the Tax Segment of the CPA Australia Program
- 6 units of credit for one of the following postgraduate taxation programs offered by the UNSW Australia School of Taxation (Atax):
- Graduate Diploma of Advanced Taxation; or
- Master of Taxation; or
- Master of International Taxation
- credit for the capstone income tax unit Taxation 531 in the Curtin University, School of Business and Law:
- Graduate Certificate in Taxation
- Postgraduate Diploma of Commerce (Taxation)
- satisfies one of the criteria for voting membership as an Associate member of The Tax Institute.
Graduates of both Foundation Tax and Applied Tax are awarded the Diploma qualification and will receive exemption for the two-semester Course in Australian taxation law as approved by the Tax Practitioners Board to register as a tax agent (conditions apply). Click here for more information.
